Opening to Your Creativity, Get Out of That Box

Is your creativity wrapped in a nice neat little box? What do I mean by that? Well recently I was transcribing the audio of a TeleSeminar series that I am co-hosting with Linda Pannell from World Changing Wisdom. Devra Ann Jacobs, literary agent, was telling us all about her own upcoming book. The subject of this book is about the boxes we place ourselves in or that we are placed in by others.

As you might have guessed the first box we find ourselves in is the birth box. And the boxes grow from there. These boxes are simply another way of saying this is how I identify myself.

And many times we use those same boxes to define our creativity. If I were to ask you to paint me a picture of a rose in oils, what would your answer be?

Would you say, "Oh no I only do sketches with charcoal." or "Oh, my talent is in water color." or "Oh, no, I don't have the talent to do that. I am a writer."

Perhaps you have learned to open your boxes a little and you answer, "Well, I've never painted a rose in oils but I will give it a try."

These are all boxes and very small ones at that. One box that I have been known to identify my creativity by is that I cannot draw. My drawing abilities reach as far as maybe a stick figure or two.

Now I'm not saying boxes are bad. They are really neither good nor bad. As a matter of fact, sometimes these boxes can serve us well. And sometimes you just don't have an interest in painting roses. So that box serves you when you say no.

But sometimes opening to your creativity requires we move outside that box. For instance, maybe a stick figure is exactly what someone is looking for.

This picture was drawn on one of my open creative days. I used a black paper and white pencil and truthfully was amazed at the results. My family looked at the pictures and responded with, "You did that?" The other images throughout this article are all photo manipulation and computer enhancement. That is my true love what I have a passion for.

So how do I get out of that box, you ask? Well the best way that I have found is through the heart or love. When we do what we love suddenly the boxes fall away.

And sometimes its just enough to recognize you are in a box and step outside just a little. That little shift in consciousness puts you on top of the box where it will do you the most good.

So step out of that box and write your story.

Yes,

Thinking outside of our own little thoughts and confinment can yield amazing results.

And it is always well worth the effort it takes to think this way.
